Shaastra, IIT Madras' annual technical festival, has, for the past eleven years, been the showcase of the technical excellence and Spirit of Engineering at IIT Madras. Between 29th September to the 3rd of October, the festival will include a variety of competitions, lectures and workshops and will attract over 30000 people, battling it out for the prize money which runs into lakhs. Shaastra has the honour of being the first technical festival to be given the ISO 9001:2000 rating.
The theme for Shaastra 2010 is ‘Imagineering Impact’. With all these spectacular events brought under the common theme of ‘Imagineering’, Shaastra 2010 promises to be a technical extravaganza that one just cannot miss.
Events: Shaastra will continue to host a myriad of events that have and shall continue to be the crowd-pullers. These events include Industry Defined Problems, Robotics, Da Vinci Machine, Junkyard Wars, Hackfest, Paper presentation and the Shaastra quizzes - Shaastra Main Quiz, How Things Work and the Shaastra Online quiz.Shaastra Unwind is expected to be a major hit through the events like Cube Open, affiliated with the World Cubing Association, Puzzle championship, Science fiction writing and new events like Mensa IQ.
Shaastra 2010 endeavours to cater to all sectors of science and technology. Frugal and the Online Programming Contest for the coding brains, Math Modelling and Chemical X for the pure science enthusiasts and Science Fiction Writing for the literary sorts.
The Shaastra Symposium: The symposium will explore the impact on society through the discussions that will be held on technology intervention and policy recommendations to improve technology in rural India. The symposium will include talks by eminent speakers and workshops that will help the young intellectuals to venture into the society prepared so that they can make a difference. After the success of last year’s symposium, the current symposium team is working hard to make the event still bigger.
AGSTVC: The Al Gore Sustainability Venture Competition will be held as a part of Shaastra 2010. This competitions aims to support innovative solutions provided by students to major world issues like climate change, sustainability, energy security and the environment. Other events on the of creating impact would include the Toy repair Bash- a massive repair campaign for techies where faulty toys are got from warehouses around the city and the repaired ones would be distributed to underprivileged kids with the help of our NGO partners, Going Vernacular - an attempt to create knowledge base in various vernaculars and Learn from Toys - a challenge to create toys with least cost while at the same time explaining a science phenomenon, to be distributed among schools in Chennai.
Workshops: The workshops at Shaastra 2010 shall be centred around bio-mimicry, forensic science and astronomy. These workshops will feature eminent personalities giving demonstrations and maybe even small competitions to involve the participants in the action rather than being just onlookers.

Other: Shaastra nights will be a showcase of technical extravaganza, hosting an RC show - a stunt show by radio controlled cars and the Air Show - the largest for the model planes in the country. In addition, Shaastra 2010 is proud to present TechX, a platform showcasing technical innovations right from industries and universities till the rural grass root innovators. With all these spectacular events brought under the common theme of ‘Imagineering’, Shaastra 2010 promises to be a technical extravaganza that one just cannot miss. Keeping with tradition, Shaastra will continue to grow and evolve and aspire to reach all corners of the world and all strata of the society with it's message.
