Faced with increasing resource scarcity, how can young people contribute to the promotion of sustainable production and consumption?

Through its Sustainable Thinking Platform, an online community for young people from all around the world to discuss and learn about sustainability issues, Vinyl 2010 is hosting a multimedia competition. They are seeking the best essays, photos, and videos that can illustrate, in the words of Vinyl 2010, "how the use of natural resources could be made compatible with the needs of today's consumers and industrial societies".

Application Information

Photo Competition:

  • Each candidate may summit up to 3 different photos.
  • Contributions must be submitted as .jpeg, .png and .bmp. If a candidate has produced photos in a different file format, they must be converted into one of the formats above.
  • Files must be at least 640x480 but no larger than 5 MB.
  • Photos presented in any other way will be disqualified.

The winner of the photo competition will receive a Panasonic Lumix G1 Digital Camera.

Video Competition:

  • Each candidate may summit only 1 video.
  • If the video contains dialogue or voice-overs, this audio must be recorded or subtitled in English.
  • If the video contains text, this must be written or subtitled in English.
  • Participants must provide a link to their videos hosted on Youtube.
  • Videos must be no longer than 3 minutes.
  • Videos presented in any other way will be disqualified.

The winner of the video competition will receive a Panasonic HDC-HS20 High Definition camcorder.

Essay Competition:

  • Each candidate may summit only 1 essay.
  • All essays must be written in English.
  • Essays must be submitted as an A4 word document with all margins set at 3cm and using 11 point Arial font.
  • Essays must be no longer than 1,000 words.
  • Handwritten essays or essays presented in any other way will be disqualified.
  • Essays must be uploaded in pdf format. If the candidate does not have the necessary software to create pdf files, there are free conversion services available for use on the internet.
