About the competition
Wribate Open 2026 – International Written Debate Championship is a global online debating competition where students compete through research, reasoning, evidence and persuasive writing rather than speed, volume or stage presence.
Eligibility:
Open to students worldwide, from any country and discipline.
High school, undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral students are eligible.
Recent graduates can also participate.
No prior debating experience is required.
Each participant competes individually, one-on-one against an assigned opponent.
Entry fee: $2.
What Participants Deliver:
Every participant completes two qualifying Wribates:
One assigned For position and/or One assigned Against position
A topic, position and opponent are FCFS basis.
Each Wribate has three written submissions within the wribate timelines:
Opening Remarks
Rebuttal
Closing Remarks
Participants may research, verify evidence and refine their writing before submission deadline. Word limits and submission windows are announced with each topic. AI tools may assist with research and refinement, but submissions must reflect the participant's own thinking, words and style.

Judging
Every debate is evaluated against six published criteria:
Quality of Argument · Logic & Reasoning · Use of Evidence · Rebuttal Effectiveness · Clarity of Writing · Civility & Respect
Judging is anonymised and the same criteria apply throughout the competition. Cumulative scores from the two qualifying Wribates determine the Top 100 Honour Roll and Top 16 knockout bracket. The Top 16 progress through the Round of 16, Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Grand Final. Jury and platform decisions are final.
Recognition & Prizes
The competition features a $1,000 prize pool, along with Champion, Runner-up and Second Runner-up honours; recognition for Semifinalists, Quarterfinalists and the Top 16; a Top 100 Honour Roll; and special awards including Best Argument, Best Rebuttal, Best Critical Thinker, Best Research and Best Writing Style. Eligible participants receive digital certificates.
