Writing your very first cover letter may seem like a daunting task, but once you are done with it, you can proudly send it out with your resume to make yourself look impressive. Here’s how to write a complete cover letter that would create a great first impression.

A cover letter is a prelude to your resume. As a complementary entity, a cover letter should not contain achievements and academic track records that can be found on your resume. Instead, it should act as an introductory letter that allows your prospective employer to better understand you prior to an interview. It is thoughtful for an applicant to share his/her reasons for the job application, and how his/her skills and personality would be a good fit for the organization. It is strongly recommended for you to:

  • Keep the length of your cover letter to only one page
  • Have a font size of between 11 and 12
  • Use the standard resume font (Arial / Calibri / Times New Roman)

Below is a good template. Replace each label that is encapsulated with a [bracket] with the relevant details.
